This thesis is concerned with adaptive wavelet methods for the approximation of images. First, the Easy-Path-Wavelet-Transform (EPWT) is introduced. The EPWT works as follows. We determine a path through all the pixels of a given image, so that adjacent pixels on the path have similar data values. Afterwards we apply a one-dimensional wavelet transform to these pixels along this path. This procedure can be applied repeatedly to the resulting low-pass part. Unfortunately, the adaptivity costs that arise from the storage of the path vectors cannot be neglected. For this reason we present some modifications of the original EPWT that help to reduce storage costs. Another idea to save storage costs is to apply the EPWT only to a part of the image, namely the edges and texture. The smooth parts of the image are approximated by a 2D-tensor product wavelet transform like the 9/7-wavelet transform, that yields optimal approximation results for smooth images. This hybrid method is introduced in the third chapter. In the last chapter we show that the EPWT provides optimal N-term approximation if it is applied to piecewise Hölder-smooth images with singularities along curves - given that the path fulfills certain conditions.de
