| de |

dc.description.abstracteng | Plants for oil production are cultivated in organic farming on only 2% of the acreage, although a large demand of ecologically produced oil exists. Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) could be adapted as a new oil crop for organic farming as it yields a valuable edible oil. Growing safflower would be possible in Germany s warm and dry regions; though there is a lack of adapted genotypes. Especially the low oil content and the high susceptibility to diseases (mainly head rot and alternaria leaf spots) are problematic. The main objective of this research was to analyze basic principles of safflower breeding and to recommend a concept for the development of cultivars adapted to organic farming. Furthermore a rapid analytic method should be established to determine seed constituents, such as oil content, of a large amount of samples. The near infrared reflectance spectroscopy offers an attractive possibility to analyze oil content easy and non-destructive. Several calibrations were developed to determine the oil content on the basis of intact achenes. Three breeding methods (pedigree method, bulk method and single seed descent) were compared. By pedigree method lines with lower susceptibility to diseases and higher oil content were developed. The bulk method as well offered good results with less labour input. The susceptibility to diseases decreased and the yield increased. The oil content was not influenced by this selection method. In safflower breeding F2- and F3-generations should be exposed to natural selection. In later generations offspring of single plants should be evaluated. The main focus should be directed on lower susceptibility to diseases and on oil content, as no increase of the oil content was achieved by natural selection. | de |
