My doctoral work is based on the multistep synthesis of a new family of triazine- and pyrazolate-based compartmental ligands, and their multi-nuclear transition metal complexes, which are of fundamental interest in bio-inorganic chemistry as well as in molecular magnetism. Interestingly I have isolated bis-phenoxyl radicals or high-valent metal-phenolate species (depending upon the ligand environment), which are fruitful in exploring the development of efficient oxidation catalyst. Moreover my dissertation consists of the use of new pyrazole based diol ligands to synthesize magnetically interesting high spin alkoxo bridged cube shaped complexes, mixed valent aggregates of manganese clusters, and a new family of 1-D exchange biased MnIII2NiII3-heterometal SMMs where the exchange bias can be controlled by chemical and structural modifications. It is also concerned about a new family of 3d-4f compounds containing MnIII. All the Mn-Ln compounds show single-molecule magnet behavior that is tuned by the choice of the lanthanide ion. The series of molecular magnets reported in this work highlights the importance of simple chemical approaches to obtain a targeted series of pure molecular species showing interesting magnetic properties.
