The objective of this study is the characterization of the grain boundary segregation in Ag-Ni and Cu-Bi alloys by means of tomographic atom probe (TAP) and other high resolution characterizing techniques. Nanocrystalline Ag-Ni and Cu-Bi alloys were deposited on tungsten tips by Ar-Ion sputtering as Ag-Ni multilayers and Cu-Bi alloys with a high supersaturation of Bi. In addition, nanocrystalline Ag-Ni alloys were prepared by co-evaporation with different Ni content. A newly developed method of preparation was introduced within the framework of this thesis. For the first time the study of grain boundary segregation in a Cu-bicrystal doped with some 10 ppm Bi was carried out with tomographic atom probe, on the basis of this new method.Contrary to existing theoretical assumptions no segregation of Ni at Ag grain boundaries was found in the multilayers and the nanocrystalline samples. In the course of heat treatments, the recrystallization of the Ag grains is, at first, hindered by finely dispersed Ni grains. Pinned Ag grain boundaries show bows which can be explained by a modified Orowan mechanism. Finally, the Ni grains coarsen in the Ag matrix. The strain energy resulting from lattice mismatch is reduced by the formation of Ni-plates.Bi is found to be already segregated in the grain boundaries of the layers in the as sputtered state. The excess found in small angle grain boundaries could be quantitatively explained by a model in which Bi-atoms, due to their size, preferentially occupy sites at dislocation cores. Thermal treatment leads to a catastrophic embrittlement of these layers. Analyses of the equilibrium segregation at 850°C of bicrystalline samples, containing a well defined Sima 19a {331} <110> grain boundary, allow the identification of the segregation enthalpy and the decrease of the specific grain boundary energy.
