The simultaneous deposition of carbon and metal ions by mass-selected ion beam deposition leads to the formation of carbon-metal-nanocomposites. The morphology of the resulting films depends on the ion energy and the fluence ratio of carbon and metal ions. Films with small (nm-size) metal clusters homogeneously distributed in an amorphous carbon matrix (homogenous nanocomposites) or multilayer structures of metal-rich / carbon-deficient and metal-deficient / carbon-rich layers with periodicities in the order of 10 nm may emerge. These features may be interesting for future applications in the field of nanotechnology. This study focuses on the investigation of the amorphous carbon with copper or nickel systems. The deposited films are analyzed by - amongst others - Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy (RBS), High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX) and X-ray induced Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS).The possible qualitative growth model for the multilayered structure developed by Gerhards and co-workers is described including the uncovered approximations: The formation of homogeneous nanocomposites or multilayer films depends on the fraction of metal segregating to the film surface during deposition and on the total metal sputtering yield SM. If, at least, a small fraction of the metal segregates to the film surface, a formation of a layered structure is possible. The total metal sputtering yield SM is established as a key parameter for switching between both film growth regimes. It can be calculated from the fluence ratio of carbon and metal ions during deposition, the sputtering yield of the carbon ions on the metal and the sputtering yield of metal ions on the metal. If SM > 1, almost all metal on the film surface is sputtered off and only a steady-state coverage remains a homogeneous nanocomposite will form. For SM < 1 the formation of a layered structure is possible. This growth mode dependence on SM is demonstrated for the amorphous carbon with copper or nickel systems.Additionally, gadolinium containing amorphous carbon nanocomposites are prepared by ion implantation of gadolinium into amorphous carbon films. These films are investigated with respect to conductivity and magneto-resistance and a field induced metal-to-insulator transition could be demonstrated.Furthermore a set of metal-carbide films is prepared by a novel method named surfactant sputtering using metal co-sputtering targets. These films show interesting surface structures which are investigated by Atomic Force Microscopy and by Transmission Electron Microscopy. The films show a dependence of the surface structure on the surface area coverage by metal atoms. The formation of carbides is demonstrated for titanium co-sputtered films while tungsten co-sputtered films form a WxC surface layer.
