Abstract
English
The chemical composition of metal/oxide (M/O)- interfaces was studied for an internally oxidized Ag1at.%Mg- and Ag1at.%Mn- alloy with MgO- and Mn3O4- nanoprecipitates in a dilute Ag matrix, respectively. To ensure a systematic investigation of the M/O-interface, at first the size distribution of the oxide precitpitates was studied as a parameter of the oxidation temperature and annealing time by means of the tomographic atom probe (TAP). It is observed that immediately after passing of the oxidation front all Mg (or Mn)- Atoms are bound by oxygen atoms. The ripening of the oxide precipitates takes place by a diffusion of MgOx- and MnOx- molecules rather than by the diffusion of single atoms. The chemical composition of the M/O- interfaces was investigated by means of small angle neutron scattering (SANS) using hydrogen (H) and deuterium (D) as a probe. SANS measurements reveal that hydrogen segregates at the internal M/O- interfaces. The scattered intensity of the segregated layer H or D was described by a sphere-shell model. The results indicate that the entire H of the sample is bound at the M/O- interfaces. The amount of hydrogen at the interfaces is in good agreement with a model of structural vacancies at densly packed interface planes. According to this model two H- atoms are bound by one excess-O at the (111)- interface. In addition, the segregated H causes a strong change of the matrix density at the interface. The volume increase due to H- segregation is 9,3 cm3/mol H and 18,5 cm3/mol H for Ag/MgO and for Ag/Mn3O4, respectively. Finally, using H as a probe it is also possible to describe the development of the particle morphology with increasing particle radius. To our best knowledge these are the very first SANS- measurements which provide information about the segregation of hydrogen and deuterium at internal interfaces.
