Gryllus bimaculatus has two position sensitive interneurons (PSI) integrating the afferents of the contralateral club-shaped (clavate) hairs in the terminal ganglion and ascending through the contralateral connective to anterior CNS as far as to the suboesophageal ganglion. There are neither afferents of clavate hairs projecting to the contralateral side nor is there neuronal connection between the two PSIs.Pitching the body results in synchronous changes of spike frequencies in both PSIs, increasing strongly during backward tilting and decreasing only weakly with forward tilting. During lateral tilting the spike frequency of the PSI ipsilateral to the downward side increases strongly. In the contralateral PSI the frequency remains nearly unchanged, in contrast to responses in Acheta domesticus, where the spike frequency of this PSI decreases (Sakaguchi & Murphey 1983).Gravity compensation is mediated by the PSI pair and is shown in the mesothoracic motoneurons. Lateral rolling is the main stimulus for this reaction. Back-forth tilting leads to no changes in mesothoracic motor activity.Three units of the mesothoracic nerve 3D1, innervating the anterior rotator of the middleleg coxa (M92) react to lateral tilting. The largest amplitude motor unit reacts purley phasic and during tilting. The median unit responds mainly tonically and increases activity on contralateral tilt. The smallest unit reacts phasic-tonically with frequency increase on ipsilateral roll. The short thoracic part of the depressor trochanteris (M103c) is innervated by the mesothoracic nerve 3D3. One unit reacts strictly tonically in correlation to tilting. Both right and left tilting lead to increase in spike frequency.Monosynaptic connections between the PSIs and the motoneurons seem unlikely. Functional connections are established by interneurons, which determine the motor output by comparing the spike frequencies of the two PSIs. Two local and four intersegmental gravity-responding interneurons, which could be involved in this motor control, were found, stained and characterized.

Gryllus bimaculatus
verfügt über zwei positionssensitive Interneurone
(PSI), die Afferenzen der kontralateralen Keulenhaare
im Terminalganglion integrieren und durch das ebenfalls
kontralateral gelegene Konnektiv nach anterior bis
mindestens ins Suboesophagealgangion aszendieren. Es
gibt weder kontralateral projizierende
kippungskorreliert aktiv. Sowohl Rechts-als auch
Linksneigung führt zu erhöhter Spikefrequenz.Monosynaptische Verbindungen zwischen den PSI und
den Motoneuronen sind extrem unwahrscheinlich. Der
tatsächliche Kontakt wird über Interneurone
hergestellt, die aus der Spikefrequenzdifferenz
zwischen den beiden PSI den motorischen Output
ermitteln. Zwei lokale und vier intersegmentale
Interneurone, die hieran wahrscheinlich beteiligt sind,
konnten gefunden, gefärbt und charakterisiert
werden.
