Information about the auditory world enters the mammalian brain through ribbon synapses of inner hair cells. Due to their fundamental role in auditory processing, these nanoscopic structures have recently received a lot of attention from the research community. The complexity of the system requires to go beyond the standard biological approaches and apply multidisciplinary methods. In this dissertation, a set of contributions to unravel the organization and function of inner hair cell ribbon synapses by using tools of mathematical modeling are presented.
Keywords: hair cell; ribbon synapse; presynaptic active zone; auditory nerve fiber; calcium dynamics; mathematical modeling; stochastic processes
