This thesis focusses on the activation and functionalization of atmospheric dinitrogen by chromium and rhenium based transition metal complexes. The electronic structure of dinitrogen bridged key species is discussed based on a broad variety of spectroscopic and theoretical methods, including magnetic measurements. Furthermore, an electro- and photosynthetic strategy is developed that converts molecular dinitrogen into nitrogenous fine chemicals within a 2-step synthetic cycle.
