It is known that calcineurin inhibitors (CNI), tacrolimus and cyclosporine have acute and chronic nephrotoxic effects. Liver transplant recipients get CNI after transplantation. Therefore, are used to spare CNI other non-nephrotoxic drugs in addition to or instead of CNI to improve kidney function. This systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials showed that, MMF can either be used de novo in the immediate post-transplant period in combination with low-dose CNI (Scenario 1), or patients receiving CNI-based immunosuppression can be switched MMF in combination with minimization or elimination of CNI (Scenario 2). Furthermore, the following endpoints have been analysed in this dissertation, acute rejection, death and transplant loss.
