Abstract

English

Aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of supportive periodontal therapy (SPT) in patients treated by dental students over an observation period of at least five years. 161 patients who had received non-surgical periodontal therapy performed by students of the department of Preventive Dentistry, Periodontology and Cariology of the University of Goettingen were included. On the basis of the medical and dental records of these patients following parameters were collected: age, gender, caries index DMF-T, general health, general risk profile, oral health, dental risk profile, oral hygiene (API and SBI) as well as the BOP values, for each patient risk analyses (low, middle, high) were performed. At the end of the study the data before initial periodontal therapy and after at least five years of supportive periodontal therapy (SPT) were compared. The mean age of the patients was 61 years. The observation period of the study averaged from five to ten years. 80 % of the patients had one to two SPT appointments per year. More than half of the patients received another (second) non-surgical periodontal therapy. During the observation period the mean DMF-T increased from 17.1±5.4 to 18.4±4.9, which was mainly influenced by the individual risk profile of the patient, whereas the number of missing teeth increased and the number of decayed teeth decreased. At the end of the observation period more patients where found in the middle and high risk group. The most important parameter was the (increasing) age of the patients. The conclusion is that without regular SPT periodontal therapy is not successful in the long term.
