The skin as barrier to the outside world protects underlying structures. Various cells of the stratified epithelium have the ability to respond to inflammation with the production of specific mediators. Inducing immune modulating effects in different type of cells, probiotics can be of healthy benefit for the host.. Interleukin-8 as a mediator of inflammation is a messenger of CXC-motif-chemokines. Il-8 is involved in the chemotactic recruit of leukocytes to inflamed tissue and therefore acts  proinflammatory. After in vitro stimulation of oral keratinocytes with probiotic extracts, the basally existing amount of Il-8 changes measurably.
