It has been shown in many studies, that dopamine plays an important role in the olfactory system. In the current study I was examining the physiological and morphological characteristics of the dopaminergic system in the olfactory periphery of Xenopus laevis larva. Measurements were made by means of confocal calcium imaging and immunohistochemistry. The results show, that dopamine modulates the odor-induced responses of olfactory receptor neurons via the dopamine D-2 receptor. While the olfactory ensheathing cells were identified as a dopamine source in the olfactory periphery, the axons of the olfactory receptor neurons expressed dopamine D-2 receptors. In addition to the dopaminergic modulation the influence of antipsychotic drugs on the odor-induced responses of olfactory receptor neurons could be observed. This current work shows a physiological effect on the olfactory receptor neurons as well as the morphological distribution of dopamine receptors in the olfactory periphery. It underlines the importance of the dopaminergic system in the olfactory periphery. de
