| de |

dc.description.abstracteng | The present dissertation describes the empirical approach employed in the development of a system of tools to aid the evaluation and selection process for students entering the eleventh form of grammar school with an emphasis on the study of economics. This system includes not only tests on scholastic achievement, which are based on the national curriculum, but includes various tests and questionnaires designed to assess individual traits concerning basic cognitive abilities, motivation and self-regulation. In the course of two studies the significance of the predictor variables has been investigated. Within the framework of a student selection process, analyses on the predictive quality of the new system, in comparison to the former method of selecting students, were also carried out. Data from the first study revealed a distinct superiority of the new system in comparison to the conventional selection procedure in terms of the prediction of relevant criteria of validity (judgement of the teachers, grades). When combined with the scholastic performance tests, data from the individual traits questionnaires attributed to a higher value of explained variance, which was three to four times higher. The second study also markedly confirmed the advantage of the new selection system over the conventional method. Its advantage became particularly apparent following the results of psychometric achievement tests, in which students selected by the new system achieved significantly better results than students selected by the conventional selection-method. In summary, it may be said that the selection system based on scholastic achievement tests and questionnaires to assess individual traits improves the quality of student-selection in comparison to the conventional method. | de |
