Abstract

Molecular compounds for the preparation of advanced materials has been the target of recent years. Earlier reports on the hydrolysis of metal alkoxides by sol-gel method have resulted in the final products containing molecular controlled species with definite composition. Further, these studies pointed out that the preparation of compounds containing three-dimensional structures has given an insight toward the atomic level control in the final materials. Recently, this idea has been extended toward the preparation of metal silicate and phosphate systems due to their wide range of applications in material science and catalysis. In this regard our research group has reported molecular metallasiloxanes and phosphonates starting from the silanetriols (RSi(OH)3). The alkane elimination reactions involving metal alkyls and organosilanetriols / phosphonic acids are the most facile route for high yield syntheses of polyhedral metallasiloxanes / -phosphonates. Moreover, the molecular structures of metallasiloxanes and -phosphonates would also give an understanding of the molecular level propagation in the formation of three-dimensional extended structures via aggregation of molecules. This thesis mainly emphasizes on the synthesis and characterization of group 12 metallasiloxanes since the group 12 metal systems (especially zinc and cadmium derivatives) since zinc is a transition metal having resemblance to the main group metals. Also the synthesis of the first polyhedral iron(II)siloxane have been presented. The results on these systems showed that (a) the synthesis of zinc siloxanes with atomic level controlled products, (b) the role of bulky substituents toward the aggregated metallasiloxane, (c) the importance of the stoichiometric control for the final metallasiloxanes / -phosphonates, and finally (d) the similarities of the group trend toward the synthesis of the molecular phosphonates. This study indeed would help to establish the similar systems with other transition or rare earth metals containing metallasiloxa nes / -phosphonates with molecular level controlled products.
