Based on data from the DEGUM (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ultraschall in der Medizin German Society for Sonography in Medicine), sonography is the most frequently used imaging technique in modern medicine. Due to continuous improvement, sonography is catching on more and more in different medical fields. To produce a significant sonogram, a physical basic understanding, operating experience, spatial sense and manual dexterity are necessary. Especially inexperienced students are lacking theses skills what causes problems in generating and interpreting the two dimensional greyscale pictures. The educational software virtusMED (virtual Scenes for Medical Education and Diagnostics), which is tested during this study by students, enables a novel, interactive exploration of the human body in real time. The students are of the opinion that the virtusMED-system is a useful completion to the traditional sonography education. Among others the advantages are: to get an overview of sonography without stress, to get a better three dimensional orientation, the system is any time on-hand, the scanning can be repeated as often as required, the system is interactive and practice-oriented as well as easy in use. Students using the virtusMED-system as a preliminary practice measured organs significantly shorter than the comparison group, even though it seems as if the system is a good addition, especially at the beginning of sonography education.
