Abstract
English
German agribusiness has run through a profound process of change during the past few years. Especially the development between agribusiness and society proceeded separatly to a large extent, so that both parties constantly moved apart from each other. Hence, today various discrepancies exist between public expectations and the perception of these demands by the industry. As a result of numerous scandals and crises (e.g., spoiled meat, dioxin in feeding stuff, BSE) the relationship between agribusiness and public is currently heavily damaged and marked by distrust. This distrust also increasingly affects the mechanisms (for instance certification standards), which were originally implemented in order to create trust and to reduce information asymmetries. Efficiency and reliability of privatly organized systems (like the German QS Quality and Safety -system) are constantly questioned in public by nongovernmental organizations such as Foodwatch or PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). The present cumulative dissertation deals with the afore-mentioned problems from a theoretical and empirical perspective predominantly using the meat industry as an example. The objective is to analyze the reasons for the low level of corporate public orientation as well as the material and social consequences of a poor industry reputation in society. Hence, the focus of the doctoral thesis is on the public reputation of the agribusiness and the quality assurance of food as an instrument of proactive reputation-management. All in all, the dissertation contains fifteen papers, which are either already published in journals or handed in and currently under review. As regards the subject matter the contributions relate to three areas: relationship between agribusiness and society, quality assurance in agribusiness and an excursus. The results of the conducted studies highlight the risk potential for the agribusiness originating from society. Furthermore, they reveal the necessity for an institutional construction and contentual conception of a strategic public relations management. In order to meet the future challenges, the areas of public relations and communications are of increasing relevance for the enterprises in the German agribusiness.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) zunehmend öffentlich infrage gestellt.
