This work deals with the optimisation of the cathode composition to enhance the performance of high temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFCs). Phosphoric acid doped polybenzimidazole (PBI) is used as membrane. The fuel cell electrodes consist of a carbon-supported platinum catalyst and contain phosphoric acid as electrolyte. In the first part of this work polybenzimidazoles are tested as cathode additives. They should immobilise phosphoric acid and optimise the acid distribution within the electrode. Furthermore surface active and hydrophilic substances (silicates, zirconium(IV)-hydroxide, triethanolamine, modified carbon, nanofiller) are investigated as cathode additive to homogenise the phosphoric acid distribution within the electrode and to increase the electrode water content. To enhance the exchange current density different carbon-supported alloy catalysts (PtNiCo, PtCo) are investigated as cathode catalyst instead of pure Pt catalysts. At first the processability of the materials as cathode additive is tested. Afterwards their influence on the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) performance is determined. Additive content and phosphoric acid content in the electrode are varied. In the case of alloy catalysts the MEA performance is investigated for different phosphoric acid contents. H2/air polarisation curves are measured to analyse the MEA performance. The applied materials and the resulting MEAs are extensively analysed.
