Abstract
English
The study compares two study groups; one that is treated with the routine bio-psycho-social approach in a rehabilitation center, the other one with the same therapy plus additional acupuncture treatment. Concurrently the acceptance towards acupuncture and the side effects are measured as well as the integration into a daily rehabilitation routine. The points of measurements are at the beginning of the rehabilitation, at the end and three month after the stay in the rehabilitation center. To measure the changes in these two study groups, the SF-36 Health Survey as well as some rehab-center specific questionnaires are used. The acupuncturists are experienced, Chinese doctors who can choose the acupuncture points without regulations. The summarized results are as followed: The intervention group got on average of six acupuncture treatments. The acceptance of the patients towards the acupuncture is high, higher than expected for the sociodemographic background of the patients. The acupuncture shows a positive effect, up to three months after the rehabilitation. The results of the acupuncture group are better than in the control group, some significantly better. Especially noticeable are the differences in the SF-36 parameters vitality and general health perceptions. With an extended rehabilitation stay the improvement in physical functioning and physical role functioning are significantly better as well. The clinic specific pain questionnaires show significant differences between the acupuncture group and the control group. This study shows that acupuncture is a safe treatment method with minor side effects. Therefore patients tolerate the acupuncture well both psychologically and physically. In addition, the study shows how uncomplicated it is to include acupuncture in a daily routine treatment. All routine treatments can continue as prescribed.
