Background and objective background: The inclusion of a higher education is a transition period of life, which then as now, requires a number of psychosocial adjustment processes of young adults. The objective of this research was a comparison of the socio-demographic and study-specific characteristics, as well as the symptoms of the clients at the psychotherapeutic counseling center of the Georg-August University Goettingen within 4 year cohorts (1971, 1981, 1991 and 2001). Methodology: All students of the different cohorts (n=808) were interviewed with standardized questionnaires (social-questionnaire, Gießen-test, questionnaire to evaluate the risk of suicide, test anxiety-questionnaire). An additional survey of the therapists was conducted after the initial meeting to assess the prognosis and symptoms of the students. The cohorts are composed as follows: In cohort 1 (SS 1971 and WS 1971/72) 182 patients are newly registered, in cohort 2 (SS 1981 and WS 1981/82) there are 239 clients and in cohort 3 (SS 1990 and WS 1990/91) 177 clients. Cohort 4 (SS 2000 and WS 2000/01) includes 210 clients. Empirial Results: With regard to socio-demographic and study-specific characteristics, an increase in age, number of semesters and the number of long-term students across all cohorts could be observed. The clientele of the counseling center included a disproportionate number of female students as well as students of the faculty of philosophy. In the cohort 4 from 2000 and 2001 we noticed a significant increase in the number of student clientel of the faculty of economics and social sciences. In the self-assesment by the Gießen-test the affected students showed an overall negative social resonance as well as tendency for a dominant behaviour. Their self-image was often influenced by perceived hypocontrolle, seclusion and social incompetence and not infrequently the mood of the students was affected by depression. In the assessment by the therapist the most common symptoms were depressive mood, disturbance of self-worth, contact difficulties as well as partnership problems. The study-specific problems such as learning disorders and work disorders were less frequent. In the temporal summary, there were significant differences between the cohorts. The symptom frequency of depressive mood nearly doubled in the time between cohort 1 (24,1%) and cohort 4 (53,8%) (p 0,001).The therapists noticed a disturbance of self-worth in approximately 50% of the students included in cohort 4 (2000 and 2001), this event was much less frequent in previous years (25,1%)(p 0,01). Conclusions/Interpretation: Mental health problems, particularly depressed mood and disturbance of self-worth increased under students at the counseling center Goettingen. This might be associated with a general increase of pressure on students. Psychotherapeutic counseling centers play an important role in the supply of students with mental health disorders and provide important support to the positive management of maturation crises. The pathologies among students have changed in part, an adjustment in the offers of counseling centers might be derived from this. Further studies are needed to monitor future developments, and also to raise the attention to the special problems of students in public and at the university.de
