The left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex is involved in emotional processing and mood generation. Cellular hypoactivity in this area results in depressive symptoms. Using non-invasive tools for modulating cortical activity, such as transcranial repetitive magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), can enhance cellular activity and excitability in the mentioned areas and therefore reduce depressive symptoms. However, transcranial stimulation has no major effect on mood in healthy subjects. In this study we aimed to evaluate the effect of tDCS on emotional processing in healthy subjects. Over the left DLPFC we applied activity-enhancing anodal tDCS, activity-diminishing cathodal tDCS and placebo-tDCS. We measured the effect of tDCS on reaction time and accuracy of identification of emotional faces. For anodal stimulation we found a significant shortening of reaction time, mainly for positive emotional content. The improvement occured under stimulation and lasted for at least 60 min. For the amount of correct responds we could not find significant effects. We conclude that there is a slight effect of tDCS on emotional mood processing in healthy subjects.de
