Abstract
English
We analysed the effect of Botulinumtoxin type A on the secretion of salivary glands on 33 patients with sialorrhoea. The salivary glands are innervated both sympathic and parasympathic. Botulinumtoxin causes a selective and reversible inhibition of parasympathic innervation. After intraglandular application of the neurotoxin we investigated if there were any changes of the contents of saliva. In 78 % there was a reduction of salivary flow that lasted on an average of 3.3 month. Only 5 of 33 patients reported about side-effects. So the reduction of salivary flow with intraglandular application of Botulinumtoxin type A is a little invasive and not painful treatment of hypersalivation.
