We study the geometry and arithmetic of Del Pezzo surfaces. Important examples are cubic surfaces, which were already investigated by Cayley, Schläfli, Steiner, Clebsch, and Cremona in the 19th century. On the geometric side, we are concerned with the geometry of universal torsors over Del Pezzo surfaces. We give a method to determine the equations of universal torsor explicitly using Cox rings. Furthermore, we prove a conjecture of Batyrev that universal torsors of smooth Del Pezzo surfaces of degree 2 and 3 can be embedded naturally in certain homogeneous spaces. On the arithmetic side, we apply universal torsors to questions about rational points on Del Pezzo surfaces over number fields. We prove Manin's conjecture concerning the number of rational points of bounded height in the case of a singular cubic surface. We give a formula for a certain factor of the leading constant in Manin's conjecture, as proposed by Peyre.de
