The PhD thesis focuses on the concept of the "total institution" which has been developed by Erving Goffman with a mental hospital serving as an example. In principle, the concept claims validity for other, similar institutions including old people s homes. The discussion of the state of research shows, however, that an in-depth analysis of the old people s homes has not yet been carried out from this point of view. Therefore, a theoretical framework based on this concept has been worked out for this study.Institutions cannot be looked at in isolation. For this reason, the actual analysis is preceded by an overview of the historical development. This is followed by an investigation of the current situation of the old people s homes in Germany, with priority being given to the structural changes resulting from the introduction of the nursing care insurance ("Pflegeversicherung") in 1995/96. A discussion of the public view of old people s homes concludes this first part.The analysis is based on an empirical investigation specially designed for this purpose. It was conducted in the residential areas of two different homes, one of them being situated in the former West German states, the other one in the former East German states. The investigation consists of a partially open questionnaire and participatory observation. The main topics are: the situation of moving in, structures of time and space as well as the social relations. Furthermore, there are two interviews with the directors of the homes.As a result of these theoretical considerations and the empirical research, the author suggests the introduction of the concept of a pseudo-total institution for similar old people s homes. It seems to be quite possible to extend this concept to other institutions as well. It is characteristic of such institutions that the behaviour of their residents often is very similar to the behaviour of people in total institutions . In contrast to these, however, this behaviour cannot necessarily be explained by existing regulations or the restricting behaviour of the staff but rather by the fact that the scope of action offered by the institutions under investigation is often not being used. Everyday life is rather dominated by other factors such as the state of health, level of education or the financial situation. These findings are confirmed by a comparison between the relevant aspects of life with regard to elderly people living outside and inside of old people s homes. All in all, this study verifies that even in old age life is still being influenced by the basic social conditions to a high degree.

Die Dissertation orientiert sich am Begriff der Totalen Institution . Dieser ist von Erving Goffman am Beispiel einer Psychiatrischen Klinik ausgearbeitet worden. Prinzipiell erhebt er Gültigkeit auch für andere, ähnliche Einrichtungen - die Altenheime gehören dazu. Die Diskussion des Forschungsstandes zeigt aber, dass eine eingehende Analyse der Heime unter diesem Aspekt bisher nicht stattgefunden hat. Deshalb wurde auf der Grundlage dieses Begriffs ein theoretischer Bezugsrahmen für diese Untersuchung erstellt.Institutionen können nicht isoliert betrachtet werden. So erfolgt vor der eigentlichen Analyse ein Überblick über die historische Entwicklung. Daran anknüpfend wird die derzeitige Situation der Heime in Deutschland skizziert. Zentraler Gesichtspunkt sind dabei die strukturellen Veränderungen als Folge der Einführung der Pflegeversicherung 1995/96. Eine Erörterung des öffentlichen Bildes der Altenheime beschließt diese Hinführung.Die Analyse beruht auf einer speziell konzipierten empirischen Untersuchung. Sie ist in zwei verschiedenen Heimen, jeweils in den Wohnbereichen, durchgeführt worden. Ein Heim liegt in den alten und das andere in den neuen Bundesländern. Die Untersuchung besteht aus einem teiloffenen Fragebogen und teilnehmender Beobachtung. Sie umfasst im Wesentlichen folgende Themenkomplexe: Einzugssituation, Zeit- und Raumstrukturen sowie die sozialen Beziehungen. Dazu kommen zwei Interviews mit den Heimleitern.Als Resultat der theoretischen Überlegungen und der empirischen Untersuchung wird die Einführung des Begriffs einer Pseudo-totalen Institution für vergleichbare Altenheime vorgeschlagen. Eine Ausdehnung dieses Begriffs auch auf andere Institutionen erscheint durchaus möglich. Charakteristisch für derartige Einrichtungen ist demnach, dass das Verhalten der Bewohner und Bewohnerinnen dem von Menschen in Totalen Institutionen des Bezugsrahmens oft stark ähnlich ist. Im Unterschied zu diesen sind die Gründe allerdings weniger in den Vorschriften und dem restriktiven Verhalten des Personals zu finden. Die in den untersuchten Einrichtungen festgestellten Handlungsspielräume werden vielfach nicht genutzt. Vielmehr bestimmen andere Faktoren den Alltag, beispielweise Gesundheitszustand, Bildungsgrad und finanzielle Situation. Dieses Resultat wird durch einen Vergleich der maßgeblichen Aspekte des Lebens von älteren Menschen innerhalb und außerhalb von Heimen bestätigt. Insgesamt belegt die Arbeit damit, dass den gesamtgesellschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen ein großer Einfluss auch auf die Lebensführung im Alter zukommt.
