We generalise the well known index bundle construction of Atiyah and Jänich to families of (generally unbounded) Fredholm operators which are assumed to be continuous with respect to the gap topology. The special case of selfadjoint operators is particularly studied and the connection with the so called spectral flow is discussed. We use this construction in order to state and prove an index theorem for certain families of ordinary differential operators. This result contains as special case the semi-Riemannian Morse index theorem as obtained by Musso, Pejsachowicz and Portaluri in 2005. Finally, we consider nonlinear perturbations of families of Fredholm operators and show that the index bundle can be used to investigate bifurcation points from a given branch of trivial solutions.de
