| de |

dc.description.abstracteng | Upper mantle electrical conductivities provide, besides seismic velocities or thermal diffusivities, another source of information on the upper mantle structure and composition.Interpretation of a long-period magnetotelluric dataset (consisting of 64 sites covering an area of 300 times 400 square kilometres in central Germany) by a three-dimensional conductivity model reveals a large area of highly anisotropic conductivities in the asthenospheric upper mantle below the array. By comparing the obtained conductivities and anisotropies with estimations of the electrical properties obtained by mixing laws (based on laboratory measurements of electrical conductivities of upper mantle materials as well as seismological results) conductivity enhancement by hydrogen diffusion along oriented olivine crystals is identified as the dominating conduction mechanism in this layer.A comparison with seismic anisotropy derived from the splitting of teleseismic shear waves (SKS or SKKS) yields to an attempt of a joint interpretation of electrical and seismic anisotropy data. | de |
