| de |

dc.description.abstracteng | The dissertation "Micro ion beam facility for the irradiation of living cells" ("Mikro-Ionenstrahl-Apparatur zur Exposition lebender Zellen") describes the design and the properties of an assembly for the irradiation of living cells with a well-defined number of high-energy ions. At the PTB ion accelerator facility, protons with an energy of 1 MeV to 20 MeV and 4He2+-ions of 2 MeV to 28 MeV are available. The beam spot is focused down to a diameter of approximately 2 micrometer using appropriate beam optics. The beam current can be reduced to a few particles per second and switched on and off within a few microseconds. Almost 100% of the ions reaching the target is detected by a thin scintillating foil and a photomultiplier tube. The aim of the work is to develop an irradiation facility for radiobiological research, which allows the mechanisms of radiation effects on living matter to be investigated more precisely than is possible using conventional irradiation techniques. | de |
