This work sheds light on the role of polar faculae with respect to the global magnetic field of the Sun, on the basis of high spatial resolution spectropolarimetric observations, while characterising their inner properties at the same time. Polar faculae, albeit found to be much more numerous than thought previously, cannot account for the magnetic flux in the polar caps of the Sun. Furthermore, magnetic flux harboured in non-bright field concentrations also falls short of the global polar flux measured by other means. Thus, most of the polar flux has to reside in a different kind of structures. The study of facular characteristics reveals very fast evolution of brightenings, within 10 seconds, as well as an important number of faculae with magnetic polarity opposite to that of the global field. The surprising result that the line of sight components of the magnetic field are constant, i.e. independent of the heliocentric angle, points to a complex magnetic structure of polar faculae. This together with more results from this work underlines the importance of the study of polar faculae and serves as constraints for future numerical simulations of magnetic elements.
