The dynamics of laser-generated single cavitation bubbles exposed to lithotripter shock waves is investigated experimentally. The effects of shock impact on the fast bubble dynamics are captured by means of high-speed photography and simultaneous pressure measurements with a fiber-optic hydrophone. Both free bubbles and bubbles in proximity to a solid wall are investigated at different shock amplitudes and times of shock arrival. Three different times of shock impingement are chosen to explore the effect of the shock wave - bubble interaction on both collapsing and expanding cavities. Due to the energy transfer from the shock wave to the bubble, the forced cavity implosion is more violent in comparison to the free oscillation. The collapse time is reduced and the shock wave emitted upon collapse is enhanced. The amplification factor increases with the amplitude of the incoming shock. The bubble centroid is translated in the direction of the incoming shock wave because of momentum transfer from the shock to the bubble. In a further experiment a solid boundary is located near to the bubble, parallel to the propagation direction of the incoming shock. The distance between the bubble and the wall is altered in several steps, as well as the time of shock impingement. The competition between the effect of the boundary and the shock-induced pressure asymmetry leads to formation of oblique jets whose angle depends on the stand-off distance.de
