Due to the large amount of phase and grain boundaries as well as the small length scales, highly efficient transport phenomena and coupling effects may occur in nano composite materials which do not appear in the very components, e.g. pn contacts or catalytic processes at the surface of a composite thin film or the coupling of magnetostrictive and piezoelectric components to a magnetoelectric material. Oxidic materials are of special interest for applications due to the ability to influence their physical properties by doping. For the production of such composite materials, typical serial lithography processes are rather complex and elaborate. An elegant method to overcome process-induced obstacles is the co-deposition of two heteroepitaxial growing materials out of the gaseous phase. Combinations of non-doped spinel and perovskite materials are well known in literature. This work deals with the question which mechanisms dominate the chemical and topological stability of co-deposited oxidic nano composites. Therefore, combinations of the spinel cobalt ferrite and various A-site doped perovskites (manganite, cobaltate, ferrate) were deposited via reactive sputter deposition. The analyses concentrate on thin films with thicknesses below 100nm, where grain formation is achieved but columnar growth does not yet appear. Thereby, the system cobalt ferrite ferrate unfolds to be an example of a stable 3-1 composite. The inclusions show the thermodynamic equilibrium form. The composite grows fully heteroepitaxial; however, the phase boundaries show misfit dislocations. Furthermore, this composite is topologically stable; the particle distribution does not change with long-term annealing. Thus, a doped composite should be obtainable in this composition via A-site doping of the perovskite and the Co/Fe ratio.A combination of cobalt ferrite and cobaltate in the sputter target is an example for a system, where the phases after deposition are not the thermodynamically stable phases at normal pressure. At first, a ferrate-perovskite with two-phase inclusions of spinel and periclase is formed. The mechanical tensions in this system change with phase changes, induced by annealing. The stable configuration is a combination of cobalt-rich spinel and ferrate-perovskite. Thus, it is not possible to achieve a 3-1 nano composite of cobaltate and cobalt ferrite via co-deposition.For the manganese-rich system, the phase distribution is not only dominated by the perovskite. Here, the formation of manganese-containing periclase and spinel-inclusions is favoured, which form surface precipitates at high deposition temperatures with a different epitaxial relation. At a lower substrate temperature, the formation of surface precipitates is kinetically hindered; the embedded smaller inclusions show indications for incoherent phase boundaries. The choice of materials for the controlled preparation of two-phase nano composites via co-deposition is strongly limited due to the similar standard formation enthalpies of the involved materials. Depending on the educt composition, one component may drive the phase distribution, whereas the second component balances the resulting non-stoichiometry in terms of a multi-component phase diagram. This limitation reveals new possibilities for the design of multi-component nano composites. In the case of the cobalt-rich system, this is observable in the formation of two-phase inclusions. The topology of the nano composite can reach from incoherent embedded inclusions via heteroepitaxial phase boundaries to surface inclusions due to mixing and formation of alien phases. These effects are strongly dependent on deposition temperature and/or temperature treatment. Mechanical tensions and surface/grain boundary energies are very likely the reason for the topological stability or insta! bility of the nano composites. Especially, this is visible at the manganese-rich system, for which long-term-annealing may even lead to a reduction of particle size.de
