Against the background of the question according to the extent of the crisis of the Roman republic between 60 and 50 B.C., the time between the so called first triumvirate and the outbreak of the civil war in 49 B.C., this publication examines the politics of all provincial governors at this time. It analyses in exemplary the careers of Aulus Gabinius who governed the province of Syria between 57 and 54 B.C. and Publius Lentulus Spinther, the governor of Cilicia between 56 and 53 B.C., compares the preparation of the governorship during the consulate, the governors' military campaigns, their relations to peers, publicans, provincials und the three dynasts, their return to Rome between triumph, trials and exile and investigates the question if the governors were following their own interests more than the interests of the state and their duty of care for the provinces.

Vor dem Hintergrund der Frage nach dem Ausmaß der Krise der römischen Republik in den Jahren 60 bis 50 v. Chr., also zwischen dem so genannten Ersten Triumvirat und dem Ausbruch des Bürgerkrieges 49 v. Chr., wird das politische Handeln aller Provinzstatthalter dieser Zeit untersucht. Exemplarisch werden die Karrieren zweier Statthalter besonders ausführlich betrachtet: Aulus Gabinius, der die Provinz Syrien von 57 bis 54 v. Chr. verwaltete, und Publius Cornelius Lentulus Spinther, der Statthalter Kilikiens von 56 bis 53 v. Chr. war. Verglichen werden die Vorbereitung der Statthalterschaft im Konsulat, die Feldzüge der Statthalter, ihre Beziehungen zu Standesgenossen,Steuerpächtern, Pronvinzialen und den drei Dynasten, ihre Rückkehr nach Rom zwischen Triumph, Prozessen und Exil sowie die Frage, ob die Statthalter mehr ihr Eigeninteresse verfolgten oder dem Staatsinteresse und der Fürsorgepflicht gegenüber den Provinzen nachkamen.
