Abstract

The legislative authority endeavours to keep animal transports as few and as short as possible with the help of additional requirements. However, animal trade in the EU and in non-European countries is increasing. Each year about 365 million farm animals are transported in the EU, 6 million of these animals are on long term transports across the EU and in non-European countries. In the mean time in European societies concerns about animal Welfare are growing. It is unchallenged that lots of factors have a high risk potential for health and Animal Welfare of the transported animals. However, climate is the main risk factor for animals during transport. To assess the general and the thermoregulative strain of pigs on commercial long term transports of more than 24 hours (14 journeys) 16 animals per transport were examined for stress response. The climatic conditions outside the truck and the microclimate inside the truck were continuously measured and analysed. In this thesis it is explained where and under which conditions maximum and minimum values for temperature, humidity, air velocity and several indices are found in the truck. With this knowledge it is going to be possible to make assumptions about the kind, number and position of sensors in the vehicle. As directly influencing physical parameters for the animal the acceleration of the truck and the amount of water consumption was measured. 16 animals per transport were equipped to measure heart rate and body temperature and diverse blood parameters were analysed. The blood parameters observed were glucose and lactate for the energy balance, protein, albumin, natrium and hematocrit were observed for the fluid balance, cortisol, creatinkinase, aspartat-aminotransferase and lactatedehydrogenase were observed because of the physical and general strain. From the statistical evaluation of the climatic values it can be deduced that the position of extreme climatic values change considerably depending on the conditions of transport (season, drive, and break). For a good assessment of the climatic conditions in the vehicle only three sensors are needed. Sensors for air velocity and humidity or a calculation of indices provide no further information with regard to measuring temperature. The parameters assessed on the animals show that the animals are exposed to strain (vehicle acceleration and (un)loading are the major points here) but that no stress limits are exceeded. Furthermore the results cause to rethink the need of continuous water supply during transport.

thermischen Bedingungen (Lufttemperatur, Luftfeuchte, Luftbewegung,
