In
nahe. | de |

dc.description.abstracteng | Research on advice taking has so far
suggested that advice is weighted less, the more it differs from a
person's initial estimate. In this work, I postulate a curvilinear
relationship between advice distance and its weighting, that is,
not only very different advice but also advice which is very near
to people's initial guess is weighted relatively little. In four
experiments, people had to make quantitative judgments on the basis
of their own estimates and advice presented to them. Analyses show
that very near advice is perceived as a social validation of
people's own assumptions and therefore leads to virtually no
revisions of the initial estimates. Moderately differing advice is
weighted more than near and strongly differing advice. This result
is independent of the type of judgment task used, the advisor's
competence and whether advice distance is manipulated continuously
or in rough steps. The results therefore suggest that the
assumption of a monotonously decreasing relationship between advice
distance and advice weighting should be revised. | de |
