Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are used in this work to model the massive-metallic-glass forming Ni25Zr60Al15 alloy. The applied atomic interaction model predicts radial distribution functions for the glass that fit well to the experimental data. Analysis of the thermodynamics shows that the caloric glass-transition (GT) temperature Tg is shifted to lower temperatures by alloying Al to Ni-Zr alloy. This effect is attributed to the larger mixing tendency of the Zr-Ni subsystem compared with the Zr-Al one. Analysis of bond angle distribution and nearest-neighbor numbers reveals two types of short range order in the system, related to the environment of Al- and of Ni-atoms. While Ni-atoms have a trigonal prismatic neighbor shell under avoidance of direct Ni-Ni contacts, the Al-atoms show an icosahedral surrounding with a tendency to form short segments of Al chains. It is the particular feature of the ternary alloy that its structure has to simultaneously accomodate both types of ordering. Even at high temperatures, the local order leads to prepeaks in the Ni- and Al-structure factors. Analysis of the van Hove correlation functions shows that the onset of the hopping processes actually takes place in a temperature range well above the kinetic GT temperature Tc. In this temperature range, the transport mechanism seems to change from a flow-like motion to a hopping-like one. The pronounced peak at the origin in the van Hove distinct correlation function gives evidence of the highly correlated nature of these hopping processes. This feature results from the existence of a well defined chemical and topological ordering in the system and primarily concerns the Ni and Al atoms. For Zr atoms, the flow-like motion is the dominant transport mode even in the region of the kinetic GT and below. The onset of the hopping processes seems to be related to decoupling effects observed in the same temperature range: e.g. decoupling of the diffusivity and viscosity (or the breakdown of the Einstein-Stokes relation). This decoupling is attributed to the existence of a spatial heterogenity in the distribution of the local relaxation times.de
