dc.description.abstract | Die computergestützte Darstellung
geomorphologischer/geologischer Informationen mit Hilfe eines
Geographischen Informationssystems (GIS) bietet einen breiten
Anwendungsbereich.
Syriens.
System steht, bisher sehr wenig betrachtet.
| de |

dc.description.abstracteng | The modern computer based geographic
information system (GIS) offers a wide range of applications. The
aim of this study is to generate a detailed GIS based
geomorphological and geological description of different
sub-regions in the Syrian Arab Republic. Key to this investigation
is the application of the multifunctional GIS-tool that allows
users to create interactive queries (user created searches),
analyse the spatial information, edit data, maps, and present the
results of all these operations.
The area of investigation lies in semi-arid Northwest of Syria and
comprises the entire province of Aleppo and large parts of four
other main provinces of Syria (Idlib, Hama, Homs and Raqqa). In
terms of population these provinces are the largest in Syria.
Therefore these provinces are used intensively for agriculture,
which led to intensive exploitation of groundwater resources and to
land degradation. Climatic change in the area, in particular the
reduction of rainfall, during the last 20 years intensified
groundwater abstraction and led to the overexploitation of
groundwater resources. Therefore, this situation requires a
comprehensive water management plan and a thorough observation of
the geoecological system. Until now, the geomorphology of this
region has not been examined in detail, even though it is an
important factor and it shows a strong correlation with the
geoecological system. In addition, the absence of digital data in
this region is a big challenge.
On the base of these issues the concept for this study was
developed. The core of this study is the development of an
integrated data base. Emphasis was placed on the
geomorphometrically and geomorphologically analysis of the digital
terrain model (SRTM based) and on remote sensing data (Landsat and
ASTER). The morphostructures were analysed. The geomorphological
knowledge of the region was completed by the analysis of various
datasets. In addition, the data and it's analysis were included in
the designed database. This database is also intended to be the
base of further investigations. | de |
