Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī (d. 1210), one of the key figures in the history of Islamic theology, played a central role in the development of a "new" kalām inspired - in part - by the Islamic philosophers. This study is concerned with a single aspect of al-Rāzī's oeuvre, namely his notion of wuğūd (being or existence). The analysis starts by taking stock of his predecessors, be it in the school of the Ash‛ariyya or outside of it. How did the Mu‛tazila, the philosophers and the Ash‛arites conceptualize the existence of God and his creatures? What is the underlying world view? The Ash‛arites held that God alone had the power to act autonomously; in their opinion, human beings were reduced to empty shells, totally dependent on Him in every aspect of their being, with the result of depleting them of any inner substance. I argue that al-Rāzī paved new grounds inside his school the Ash‛ariyya by separating the existence of the things from their inner substance. Inspired - amongst others - by some concepts of the Islamic philosophers, in particular by their distinction between existence and quiddity (substance) he managed to return the own inner substance to creatures. By doing this he was able to soften the radical concepts of his school. Concentrating on the concept of existence this study traces back the path al-Rāzī takes in achieving this aim.

in jedem Aspekt unmittelbar abhängt. Ar-Rāzī betrat hier in
gewissem Umfang Neuland. Dies aufzuzeigen, war Ziel der
vorliegenden Analyse.
