dc.description.abstract | Soret-Konvektion in binären Ethanol-Wasser
Mischungen und einer pseudo-binären, komplexen Mikroemulsion wird
auf Basis der Geschwindigkeitsamplitude und
Strömungsfeldvisualisierung vergleichend untersucht. Die
experimentellen Ergebnisse zur konzentrationsgetriebenen Konvektion
in binären Mischungen mit positivem und negativem
Separationsverhältnis zeigen hinsichtlich Stabilität und
Strömungsstruktur ausgezeichnete Übereinstimmung mit theoretischen
Vorhersagen.
| de |

dc.description.abstracteng | Soret convection in binary ethanol-water
mixtures and a pseudo-binary microemulsion is experimentally
investigated by means of velocity amplitude measurements and flow
field visualisation. The results for the molecular binary mixtures
with both positive and negative Soret coupling are found to be in
excellent agreement with theoretical predictions. Concerning the
microemulsion, the onset and the dynamics of convective motion in
the Soret regime is determined by the very small diffusivity of the
micellar pseudo-phase, i.e. extremely slow concentration
relaxation, and a particularly large positive separation ratio.
Therefore, the temperature and concentration fields effectively
decouple and convection is initiated by a local instability of the
concentration boundary layer. Approaching the critical region of
the lower consolute point of the microemulsion, the concentration
boundary layer is further intensified leading to localised phase
separation well apart from the critical point. Thereby, the
experimental access to the critical region is intrinsically limited
in presence of a temperature gradient. | de |
