In the last decades of the 12th century the splendid Romanesque crypt was integrated in the choir of the early Romanesque Naumburg cathedral. In the first third of the 13th century the eastern parts of the building and the nave were pretentiously and spaciously reconstructed in late Romanesque style. These two periods are subject of the presented study. The systematization of the buildings decoration with regard to the construction and the history of the building is analysed and compared to Saxon-Thuringian and Rhenish-Cologne examples. This work closes the gap between the early Romanesque and the Gothic construction period. Methodically, this study goes beyond former research, as not restricting to capitals and other ornamented workpieces, but including all elements, structurizing space and walls: For the first time, an extensive analysis of the pillar system is consistently used in this study to define the characteristics of the Naumburg Romanesque cathedral compared with nu! merous important other buildings and groups of ornament.

In den Chor des frühromanischen Naumburger Doms wurde im letzten Viertel des 12. Jahrhunderts die prächtige hochromanische Krypta eingebaut. Im ersten Drittel des 13. Jahrhunderts wurde der anspruchsvolle, weiträumige spätromanische Neubau der Ostteile und des Langhauses ausgeführt. Diese beiden Bauphasen sind Gegenstand der vorliegenden Untersuchung. Die Systematisierung des Bauschmucks im Zusammenhang des Baukörpers und der Baugeschichte wird analysiert und mit sächsisch-thüringischen bzw. rheinisch-kölnischen Beispielen verglichen. Die Forschungslücke zu den beiden späteren romanischen Bauabschnitten wird damit geschlossen. Methodisch geht diese Untersuchung über bisheriges hinaus, indem sie nicht auf Kapitelle oder aufwendig verzierte Schmucksteine beschränkt bleibt, sondern alle Elemente einbezieht, die Raum und Wände strukturieren: Die umfassende Stützensystem-Analyse wird in dieser Untersuchung erstmals konsequent eingesetzt, um die Charakteristika der Naumburger romani! schen Domkirche im Vergleich mit zahlreichen wichtigen anderen Gebäuden und Ornamentgruppen zu bestimmen
