Pottery from the roman iron age and the migration period from Hildesheim-Bavenstedt The freely-formed pottery from Bavenstedt belongs to the group of Rhein-Weser-Ceramics. But there are also pieces from the coast, from northeast Lower Saxony and pottery, that is influenced by the roman culture. 6% of the pottery material belongs to the so called ''Hanoverian wheel-thrown-pottery''. The origin of this material is - belonging to geological analysis - to be found in a circle of about 5 km around Bavenstedt. Because of the typology of this pottery and of the defects, which can be found on the ceramics, it seems to be sure, that it was produced by local potters, using a roman technology. Comparing the hanoverian wheel-thrown material with the eastwestfalian and other wheel-thrown pottery shows, that the hanoverian group has to be seen as a local production of wheel-thrown material, which is only to be found along Leine and Innerste river between Alfeld, Hannover and Hildesheim. The producing place(s) is (are) not found yet.

Die handgemachte Bavenstedter Keramik gehört ins Spektrum der rheinwesergermanischen Ware. Dazu kommen elbgermanisch beeinflußte Stücke sowie Nachahmungen von römischen Gefäßen. Desweiteren weisen Austerngrusmagerung sowie ein Zweihenkeltopf des Typs Fuhlsbüttel auf eine Verbindung zur Küste hin. 6% des Keramikmaterials sind der sog. hannoverschen Drehscheibenware zuzurechnen, deren Herkunft aufgrund naturwissenschaftlicher Analysen des Tons im Umkreis von ca. 5 km um Bavenstedt herum zu suchen ist. Die herstellungsbedingten Fehler an der gedrehten Ware weisen genauso wie das Formenspektrum auf eine einheimische Produktion unter Verwendung einer römischen Technologie hin. Der typologische Vergleich mit der ostwestfälischen Drehscheibenware und den Braunschweiger Parallelen zeigt deutlich, daß es sich um eine eigenständige Gruppe innerhalb der germanischen Drehscheibenware handelt.
