Abstract

English

Myofibroblasts (MF) are connective tissue cells with properties of smooth muscle cells and fibroblasts. In contrast to normal fibroblasts they express alpha smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and Thy-1. MF have influence on the growth and differentiation of epithelial cells, as well as the modulation of the immune response. The aim of this study was to analyze the gastrointestinal MF and the MF of the liver of healthy rats. The MF were first cultivated and afterwards identified and characterized upon ultrastructural and molecular markers. Besides the many similarities in terms of morphology, staining behavior and ultrastructure, the differences found by us in the gene expression analysis suggests an organ-specific function of the different MF.
