Menopause is associated with a decline of female hormon production. This leads to typical symptoms, such as dry skin with decreased elasticity and ability of wound-healing, a decline of skeletal muscle mass or sarcopenia or the development of a metabolic syndrom MetS. The conventional hormone replacement therapy HRT of these climacteric complaints is effective but bears great risks, for example the increased incidence of cardiovascular diseases or mammary carcinomas. Therefore alternative therapies are required. Cimicifuga racemosa CR has already shown plenty of positive effects on perimenopausal symptoms in previous studies. This study investigated the histomorphometric effects of CR and the two fractions (Saponins and restfraction RF) on skin, subcutaneos fat layer SCF, skeletal muscle and elastic fibres of ovariectomized Sprague-Dawley rats as an animal model of the menopause. After 30 days of orally treatment, samples of skin, SCF and muscle layer were evaluated histologically. Saponingroup was the one with thickest epidermis and greatest gain of skeletal muscle and elastic fibres with a significant reduction of SCF at the same time. In contrast to earlier studies, RF however showed the most substantial decrease of SCF, an important marker of the MetS.de
