Abstract

English

Irregular termination happens often and is a critical event in residential drug detoxification. Since more than 50% of patients terminate their detoxification and mortalitiy rate is increased afterwards, it is important to look for possibilities to improve the results of detoxification programs. in this research half of the patients that were at the end of their detoxification or wished to irregularly end it were confronted with a video that had been taped during their inpatient admission. There was no difference between both groups; the termination rate was 45% (p=0,035) in both groups. But: in the experimental Group 2/3 actually watched their video (the others used their right to refuse watching it) and of those 2/3 the Termination rate was significantly lower, namely only 24%. We did not find any connections between the emotional effects of the fear arousal and the termination rate [Pearson´s correlation: ,071; p (1-sided) = ,338]. We also did not find any correlation betweenreactance and endurance in the therapy [Pearson´s correlation: ,056; p (1-sided) = ,3695]. The confrontation with the video did not induce additional craving. Also there was no statistical significance between craving and endurance in therapy [Pearson´s correlation: ,191; p (2-sided) = ,258]. We did not find any difference in the willingness to take part in the Video confrontation between men and women (Chi² = 0,0616; p = 0,432). Nevertheless we found some differences in the reaction towards fear arousals between men and women. Patients with drug addictions are an inhomogeneous group that needs specific help for the regular termination of inpatient detoxification for which we will need further reseach.
