MRI-volumetric Examination of the Volume of Cerebellar Lobulus Centralis in Patients with Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia Bipolar Disorder (BD) and Schizophrenia (SZ) are common diseases, but their neurobiologic bases are widely unknown. Many studies had examined BD and SZ via neuroimaging and found an indication of a relation between the diseases and different brain regions. These brainstructural variation could be relevant in the diseases pathogenesis, but not all of these brainstructures had been sufficiently analyzed yet. There are rare studies about structural changes in cerebellum. Therefore this study concentrated on parts of the cerebellum and analyzed their structural changes. We examined 38 patients with BD, 28 patients with SZ and the same number of healthy people via cerebral MRI. The lobulus centralis oft he cerebellum was marked as region of interest (ROI), then the absolute volume was computed by the number of voxels. To compensate differences caused by age, gender and size, we computed the relative volume of the lobulus centralis via the quotient of absolute volume and grey matter volume. According to former studies we expected no changes in BD patients for the volume of lobulus centralis and an reduced volume in SZ patients. In addition we testet if clinical parameters and neuropsychiatric tests correlated with lobulus centralis volume. The results of this study were surprisingly different. There was a significant positive correlation for the number of manic and depressive episodes with the volume of lobulus centralis in patients with BD. Furthermore we found increased grey matter volume in BD patients without additional neuroleptic medication compared to typical and atypical neuroleptics. There was a non significant positive correlation between the medication with duration of lithium and lobulus centralis volume. SZ patients showed no significant correlation. There was a non significant correlation between the volume of lobulus centralis at SZ patients with schizophrenic relatives. But the number of cases with SZ patients and schizophrenic relatives was only 5. Comparing BD and SZ patients there were no significant correlations found, too.
