A total of 137 water samples were taken from 95 dental treatment units and additionally eight samples from the in-house water system directly before entry into the dental unit and were used to the calculation of the microbial germ load. The total bacterial counts of Legionella pneumophila in the mixed water samples varied considerably. In the samples for the detection of Legionella species in 100 ml of the values varied from 0 to 30,000 cfu. Of the 137 water samples 70 were contaminated with L. pneumophila and 3 with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In any case E.coli could be proved. From the water samples of the in-house water system L. pneumophila concentrations between 140-5,400 cfu/100 ml water could be detected.
