Not only women but also men suffer from Osteoporosis. Pathophysiologically the disease is characterized by a decreasing bone density which initially affects the cancellous bone, later on the cortical. In our first part of the trial 172 male Sprague- Dawley rats were vibrated five days/ week for 15 min at 25-30 Hz for four weeks, immediately after Orchiectomy. We were able to confirm, as measured by peripheral quantitative computed tomography the preservation of the cancellous bone through preventive vibration therapy. In our second part we examined the effect of a two, three or eight week administration of Genistein and Equol. The control group received soy -free feed. The substitution of genistein and equol could tend to slow the continuous decrease of the BMD (bone mineral density) of the cancellous bone. The osteoporotic bone often suffers a fracture. We wanted to study the effect of the phytohormones during a bone defect healing. We therefore triggered an experimental bone defect by trepanation of the cortical tibia. Genistein and equol were applied for two, three or eight weeks. Genistein could accelerate the mineralization of the cortical bone while the bone healing. A further aim of the study was to examine the combination of phytohormones and vibration therapy while the healing process. A few animals were vibrated again six weeks after the bone defect. The combination of Genistein and vibration seems stabilizes the bone the most. Finally we examined the the cross-sectional area of the muscle paratibial and its fat depot. The results were not very meaningful, so another analytical method for muscle mass and strength may be useful.
