Clinical periodontal and dental parameters in patients with Chronical Bowel Disease Aim: The aim of this clinical cross-sectional study was to evaluate the periodontal and dental situation of patients with chronical bowel diesease (CBD) compared to healthy control subjects (HC). Material and Methods: 59 CBD-patients with the diagnosis of Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis (49.81 ± 12.1 years, f = 25, m = 34) and 59 HC (51.33 ± 12.0 years, f = 25, m = 34) were included in this study. HC-patients were matched to CBD-patients considering age and gender. Dental examination of all patient groups included: dental findings (DMF-T), papillas bleeding index (PBI) and evaluation of periodontal situation (pocket probing depth [PPD], clinical attachment level [CAL]). Periodontal condition (PPD and/or CAL) was classified into no, mild, moderate or severe periodontitis. In addition oral findings were documented. Statistical analysis: level of significance: α = 5 %. Results: The mean DMF-T showed no significant difference between CBD and HC. But the mean D-T was significantly different between CBD and HC (CBD: 0.73 ± 1.9, HC: 0.02 ± 0.1; p = 0.001); CBD-patients showed by trend more M-T than HC (M-T: CBD = 4.36 ± 4.9, HC = 3.66 ± 4.6; p = 0.19). Furthermore, values of PBI (CBD: 1.26 ± 0.8 HC: 0.27 ± 0.4, p < 0,001) and CAL (CBD: 3.32, HC: 2.12, p < 0,0001) were significantly higher for CBD-patients. PPD was not significantly different (CBD: 2.39 ± 0.5, HC: 2.36 ± 0.8; p = 0.81). 42 % of CBD- and 20 % of HC-patients had a severe periodontitis so that the difference of PA was significant (severe: CBD = 25, HC = 12; p = 0.04). Differences between Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis could not been observed (p > 0.05). Oral find-ings in CBD-patients were rare and non-specific. Conclusion: The majority of CBD-patients showed significant higher D-T, PBI, CAL and more severe periodontitis in comparison to HC.de
