Abstract
English
Working memory deficits are core findings in patients with schizophrenia. But until now there is not a study that shows those impairments in comparison to a norm sample. We generated sex-, age- and education-dependent standard values for verbal and visual-spatial Sternberg paradigm. In our study schizophrenic patients showed in the total group analysis significantly worse performances in both verbal and visual-spatial working memory task. The effect sizes were similar to prior studies without using norm samples. Furthermore, as well as in the previous study of Zilles (2010) shown, we identified subgroups of patients with a deficit in only one working memory task (verbal or visual-spatial). The identification of these homogeneous subgroups could help to improve the classification and the treatment of schizophrenia. In addition, we found significantly negative correlation between the working memory performance and the antipsychotic medication on the one hand and the PANSS-Score on the other hand.
