Abstract

English

Gastric emptying can be delayed due to a neuropathy of the gastrointestinal tract. Former experiments showed that a rapid changing in the blood glucose concentration leads to a deceleration (hyperglycaemia) or increase (hypoglycaemia) in gastric emptying. But to which extent do spontaneous changes in blood glucose concentrations, which are typical for patients with a diabetes mellitus type 1, affect the parameter for the rate of gastric emptying? And how far are the measurements of gastric emptyings reproducible? To answer these questions the gastric emptying of 20 diabetic patients and a control group of 10 healthy persons was measured repeatedly by using the carbon-labeled octanoid acid breath test. Before and during the tests, the blood glucose concentration was monitored. In this small study we could not find a measurably effect of the spontaneous changing in blood glucose concentration on gastric emptying. The results of the measurements were despite the variability of the blood glucose concentrations reproducible. Therefore our results do not support the current opinion, that the carbon-labeled octanoid acid breath test can only be used when the patient is euglycaemic.
