Little is known about the neuroanatomy of the auricular muscles in humans. To locate the cortical representation of the posterior auricular muscle (PAM) in humans, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) mapping was performed in 8 healthy subjects. For comparison a similar experimental protocol was performed for a hand muscle. To improve the quality of TMS mapping, a robotic and neuronavigated system was used for coil positioning. Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) were elicited in the preactivated PAM in all subjects with the coil positioned over the precentral gyrus. The optimal coil position to elicit MEPs in the PAM was located lateral to the hand area. In the present study the cortical representation of the PAM was identified for the first time. Moreover the study found that all subjects were able to voluntarily activate the PAM. The involvement of the primary motor cortex in PAM activation suggests a further function of the auricular muscles in humans which still has to be elucidated.de
