The term 'Theory of Mind' refers to the ability of healthy adults to attribute different mental attitudes to themselves and others. This dissertation deals with the question of what role this particular area of human cognition plays in the reception of literary narratives. 'Theory of Mind' is an ability supported by a whole catalogue of cognitive mechanisms. This group of cognitive mechanisms can be defined with the help of existing (predominantly empirical) developmental psychological studies. In this dissertation I then look for parallels between the performance requirements of the 'Theory of Mind' and those that arise while reading a literary narrative text. The latter performance requirements can be identified by examining the typical characteristics of such texts, and in a second part of the study by the individual characteristics of two selected literary works. It is argued that the mechanisms that also support the mechanisms of the 'Theory of Mind' are of crucial importance for, among other things, the interpretation of motivated literary statements and actions, the reconstruction of literary perspectives, the reconstruction of different narrative levels and the reconstruction of the story with the help of one's own imagination. The comparison of two literary works showed that despite the obvious differences in terms of narrated content and diegesis, a number of parallels could be reconstructed in the cognitive performance requirements that these texts pose to their readers.de
